Tier 4: Hawaii Massage Covid-19 Update

 Aloha Friends,

Although the effects of the pandemic continue to weigh heavy, there is now light at the end of the tunnel. On June 11, 2021, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced the approval for Oahu to move ahead to Tier 4 of the city’s Reopening Strategy.

Tier 4 Massage Updates

Not much has changed for the field of massage therapy, but there is one guideline that is now omitted from the required procedures for personal care service providers.

Under Tier 4, massage service providers no longer have to wear face shields over their masks.

This is a huge step forward in our ability to move towards pre-pandemic operations. Although clients and therapists are still required to wear masks at all times, this omission from the guidelines will allow massage therapists to work with lesser lung fatigue.

Our clients' safety and comfort level is of the highest priority.

We are always happy to wear face shields when requested. Please feel free to let us know. Your safety and comfort is important to us, and we want you to be able to relax during your massage. You can also request that your massage therapist wear a NIOSH-approved N-95 respirator during your treatment. Otherwise, your therapist will use their best judgment in selecting either a KN-95 or an N-95 respirator to wear while performing massage.

When will Oahu, Hawaii return to no restrictions for massage?

Many of you are anxious to not wear your mask during massage services. We want you to know that we appreciate your willingness to follow the city and county of Honolulu's Covid-19 regulations. There is speculation that once Hawaii reaches the vaccination threshold of 70%, there will no longer be any restrictions on massage. For now, you must wear your mask during your services even if you are fully vaccinated. We apologize for the inconvenience. Mahalo for your kokua.

Stay tuned for updates.

Love,
Sonia

Update on sublease opportunity

 4/14/2021

We have tentatively found a new tenant to share our space in the Ka'ala Healing Arts Center. However, we are happy to keep your information on file in case future opportunities become available or the prospective tenant changes their mind.

Please feel free to contact Sonia at 808-285-3009.

Here are the details on the shared space:

190ft2 - Massage Therapy or Wellness Office to Share on the North Shore (Waialua)

Located in the beautiful Ka'ala Healing Arts building in Waialua. Close to Haleiwa, North Shore, and Wahiawa. See photos below.

I am looking to share my fully furnished office with a licensed massage therapist, healthcare worker, or other service provider.

There is a desk area, high-speed internet access, massage table, Ashiatsu overhead bars, and sink (hot and cold water), along with generous counter space. We share a large waiting room with the rest of the center.

Ideally, I am looking to split working hours and rent 50/50. I prefer to work weekdays and would like to share the space with someone who desires a schedule that compliments mine. I am open to negotiation with the right person.

You must be licensed in the state of Hawaii, have liability insurance, and be able to provide references.

The Benefits of Kukui Nut Oil

The Hawaiian Secret to Radiant Skin

Kukui nut oil massage is available in Waialua

Kukui nut oil is extracted from the candlenut of the Aleurites Moluccanus tree. Well-known in Hawaii and the islands of Polynesia, it has been used for centuries in religious ceremonies and as a topical skincare product. This product is known for its healing, medicinal benefits.

Kukui nut oil contains 40% linoleic acid, 15% oleic acid, and 30% linolenic acid. Due to its high concentration of naturally occurring essential fatty acids, it is the perfect addition to your beauty regiment. Kukui nut oil soothes dry skin and can also be used as a protective barrier against harsh environmental conditions. Many people use it for psoriasis and other skin conditions. In a medical setting, kukui nut oil has been studied for its anti-inflammatory effects and its ability to promote wound recovery.

Here at our Waialua massage clinic, nestled by the surf town of Haleiwa, we offer a wide variety of massage services. To soothe and prevent dry skin, try our luxurious kukui nut oil massage add-on. Our blend of essential oils will help calm your mind, body, and spirit while soothing skin irritation. If you have spent a week in the fun and sun of the North Shore of Oahu, it is just what your skin needs.

After your Waialua massage appointment, shop for the best beauty products that Hawaii has to offer in the nearby town of Haleiwa. From fragrant soaps at the Soap Factory by the Waialua sugar mill to Oils of Aloha products at the North Shore Marketplace, you'll find many local products for healthy skin.

Hassle-free Tips

Most stores will ship their products directly from Haleiwa to your friends and family on the mainland. Save room in your luggage by asking for this service! You can also visit one of the two convenient US post office locations nearby. I prefer the one in Waialua, next to the Waialua Public Library. It is usually less busy and has more parking available than Haleiwa.

While most people drive from Honolulu to the North Shore to explore the beaches and shopping of Haleiwa, you should also check out the nearby town of Waialua. Minutes away, it is appealing for travelers who prefer to avoid crowds. On Saturday mornings, enjoy the quaint farmers market at the Waialua sugar mill. You will find local Waialua farmers selling all kinds of tropical fruits and veggies. There are also amazing food trucks as well. My personal favorite is Banyan's Island Grill.

For a more rugged and isolated beach excursion, continue to the end of Farrington Highway in Mokuleia. Here, you will find pristine beaches with far fewer tourists than Haleiwa. While you shouldn't completely pass on the famous beaches of the North Shore, such as Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, you will find the same honu and humuhumunukunukuapua'a here in Waialua.

Call our Waialua massage clinic near Haleiwa to book your kukui nut oil massage today. We offer traditional lomilomi Hawaiian massage, deep tissue, and ashiatsu therapy with over 20 years of experience.

apprenticeships temporarily postponed

Aloha Friends and Family,

All Reiki, breathwork, and energy work classes are temporarily postponed. Please read my message below for additional information.

Infant massage classes are still available at your location.

I just wanted to make a quick post regarding apprenticeship opportunities for energy work. I have had so many requests for apprenticeships and classes over the past two weeks! It makes me so happy to know that people are ready and willing to spread health and joy in their community. I am filled with hope for the future!

Unfortunately, it has been a trying time. My new establishment permit is still pending after over a month. I have not heard from the Hawaii State Professional and Vocational Licensing service, and they are not answering their phone. In addition to this, my children are getting accustomed to the post-COVID school situation. UPDATE: After almost four months of waiting, I have been granted a new MAE massage establishment license! Thank you for your patience.

For the time being, I am discontinuing all energy work, Reiki, breathwork, and healing apprenticeships until I can get things sorted out. I want to be able to give you my all, and in these circumstances, I find myself struggling.

In the meantime, please feel free to call or email. I have plenty of instructional materials to get you started and am happy to share them!

Sincerely,

Sonia Beauchamp

Massage therapy: post COVID-19

Aloha North Shore friends,

It has been a long time since I've updated this blog, and for this, I apologize. Like most of you, I have been in shock the past few months, praying for my at-risk friends and family. I have been following the stay-at-home orders put forth by the state of Hawaii. My two children are so fortunate to be close in age and best of friends. My husband was able to get time off of work as well. We have been so lucky.

I want to extend my sincerest thank you to all the essential workers who risked their lives every day these past months. We owe so much to you!

How will COVID-19 change massage therapy?

As of June, in the city and county of Honolulu, massage therapists are allowed to return to work. However, there are many new guidelines in effect. Masks must be worn by both the therapist and the client, and the waiting area is off-limits. We are also urged to use contactless payment methods and online intake procedures. There are strict disinfecting protocols that go far beyond simply changing sheets and linens between clients.

Post-COVID-19 Guidelines for Massage Therapy

When can I resume massage therapy on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii?

It is now almost the end of June. I am busy reopening under a new business entity: North Shore Integrated Massage LLC. It has taken over a month to get the licensing in order, and I am still working on attaining a new MAE establishment permit. I hope to be able to return to work in early July. I have ordered all the essential PPE and sanitation products and am now only waiting on the paperwork to go through.

Will massage still be covered under my health insurance policy?

Yes, if your health insurance covered massage therapy pre-COVID-19, you should still have the same coverage. However, since North Shore Integrated Massage LLC is a new business entity, we will need to get re-credentialed to place the new clinic on approved provider lists. This process may take some time. Unfortunately, we are unable to see any patients through their health insurance until this transition is made. If you need a massage, please call the number on your card in the meantime for a referral to another therapist. Depending on the cost of operating under the new post-coronavirus guidelines, we may no longer be able to accommodate certain policies. It will be trial and error, so we may not accept new insurance patients while we establish our protocols.

How do I make an appointment for a massage on the North Shore of Oahu?

At the moment, we have a waiting list for the month of July. Please call or text to have your name added to the list. We will not be taking online appointments in order to ensure that everyone fills out the mandatory waiver before their session. We are not currently open or accepting appointments as of today, June 22, 2020, but we expect to reopen in a few weeks.

North Shore Integrated Massage LLC summer updates:

In addition to our new name, we have also bid a sad farewell to Mona Thai Bodyworks. Unfortunately, Mona had to relocate to the mainland. We will miss her so much! That being said, there is now space available for an additional massage therapist at our location! Please give Sonia a call to inquire at 808-285-3009.

I have missed working so much and am so excited to return soon. Please let me know how you are doing! I would love to hear from you via phone, email, or social media.

All my love,

Sonia Beauchamp

I look forward to "seeing" you soon.

Massage and Sanitation: COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus update

Aloha everyone,

In light of the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus outbreak, I wanted to take a moment to assure you that we are following a strict sanitation protocol at our clinic. We are following the recommendations of state and government agencies, as well as the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). We are open, and it is business as usual.

My partner, Mona Ballard of Mona Thai Bodyworks, is also accepting massage appointments at our location in Ka'ala Healing Arts. You can learn more about her business here: www.monathaibodyworks.com

Proper sanitation procedures for massage therapists:

Massage therapists are licensed by the State of Hawaii and have strict protocols already in place. Your massage therapist should practice the following:
  • Thorough hand washing before and after each treatment
  • Disinfecting the therapy room with a hospital-grade disinfectant (this includes: handles, light switches, knobs, pump-bottles, credit-card machines, etc.)
  • Clean linens for each client
  • Wiping down the face-cradle between each client following the manufacturer's instructions
  • Using trash can liners for the disposal of used tissues

Additional protocols:

  • Have each client wash their hands before and after their massage
  • Instead of using protective fleece covers on the face cradle, use a double layer of face cradle covering to be changed entirely for each client

Regarding cancellation policies for massage appointments:

Our 48-hour cancellation policy has always been waived when clients feel unwell. It doesn't matter how close it is to the time and date of your massage, if you feel unwell, you should cancel your appointment immediately. Receiving a massage when you are getting sick can make your symptoms even worse. You should never get a massage when you have body aches that could be attributed to a cold or illness. In light of COVID-19, both massage clients and therapists should be extra precautious regarding this.

Can I request that my massage therapist wear a surgical face mask during treatment?

At the moment, we have used our entire supply of surgical masks. Unless surgical masks are made available to our clinic, we are unable to grant your request to wear a mask while performing massage. However, our clients are more than welcome to bring their own masks to wear.

It is business as usual at our North Shore massage clinic near Haleiwa

Thank you for your time in reading this message. We are doing everything in our power to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our North Shore, Oahu massage clients. If you ever have concerns about the sanitation procedures at your local massage clinic, don't be afraid to ask. It is your right to know the sanitation protocols of a clinic before booking a service.

I highly discourage customers from booking with massage therapists who charge a late-cancellation fee in the event of an illness. This is a poor and unsafe business practice that doesn't take into account the well-being of the community.

I hope you all stay healthy and happy. Please take the time to do the things you love and spend time with the people who are important to you!

Much Love,
Sonia

Aloha everyone,

I no longer accept health insurance plans that do not provide written information regarding massage therapy benefits to their providers. The administrative burden of accepting these cases is too overwhelming for me as a sole proprietor. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Please note that this does not include ASH Group and HMAA. I still happily accept Ash Group, HMSA, Kaiser Permanente, and HMAA benefits for massage. I also accept some personal injury and no-fault cases if my schedule allows.

If your health insurance company is not listed above and claims to cover massage therapy, please urge them to update their handbook for massage providers along with their benefits information in their plan policy. Once they have procedural guidelines in writing, more providers will be willing to accept their patients.

I understand your frustration with not being able to find a therapist on the North Shore who will accept your insurance for massage. I'm sorry to not be able to do more to help.

Sincerely,
Sonia

Ka'ala Healing Arts Facebook Page

Aloha Everyone,

I just wanted to announce some exciting news! The Ka'ala Healing Arts Center now has a Facebook page. If you want to find out the latest news on health and wellness in Haleiwa and the North Shore, make sure to like and follow us. There are several massage therapists on-hand to suit your needs. From zen shiatsu to barefoot massage, medical massage to deep tissue, and even craniosacral therapy, there is a massage specialist who can help you in the building. In addition to massage with one of Ka'ala Healing Art's therapists, you can get award-winning brows and lashes at Hoku Hale. There is also family therapy, counseling, and colon cleansing services.

Stay tuned for our provider spotlight coming soon. Each post will feature the latest information about a different therapist at the center.

Ka'ala Healing Arts offers wellness therapy for the Haleiwa area

Take advantage of the convenient location of Ka'ala Healing Arts. We are just outside the town of Haleiwa in the North Shore. There is a small fruit stand open most days next door to us. Buy local fruit and vegetables after your appointment without having to go to the farmer's market. Avoid the town of Haleiwa entirely and check out the businesses at the sugar mill before or after your services. There is a great new food truck called Banyan's Island Grill. They serve fresh-caught local fish plates and have the best crispy french fries for the kids!

Mahalo for reading this. Take care and call soon to book your massage appointment. I also make house-calls for on-site massage therapy as well. I will happily come to your location in Waialua, Haleiwa, or Turtle Bay Resort. Discounts are available for multiple people wanting sessions on the same day at the same location.

Sincerely,

It is with a heavy heart that I make the following announcement:

Limited availability for massage covered by health insurance

Due to low reimbursement and an increased administrative burden, I have made the decision to slowly discontinue seeing patients covered under their health insurance policy for massage therapy.

In the late 1990s, health insurance coverage for massage was unheard of. We all wished that one day, massage would become a reimbursable medical treatment. Nothing has made me happier than working hard to make this happen. However, my overall well-being has suffered after four years of turning appointments around quickly to better suit the medical massage model. I have been forced to face the fact that the insurance model for massage therapy is flawed and failing. Providers of massage who are sole-proprietors are not being reimbursed enough for their services and are sometimes even losing money when they take on a new insurance patient due to the increased administrative burden. It makes no sense that I continue doing business with the companies that have not streamlined their provider services for alternative care therapists. The administrative efforts that are necessary to bill insurance for certain companies are overwhelming and not feasible for providers without front-end staff to help. Hopefully, provider services will someday be streamlined to allow for alternative care providers to verify coverage and submit claims online. Some companies have already invested in doing this. As soon as administrative burdens decrease, we will be happy to make more accommodations.

For now, we will continue to see as many insurance patients as our schedule allows, but we will slowly begin to phase out our participation with certain companies over the months to come.

Mahalo to all of you for your continued support!

Giving Thanks: North Shore Oahu

Aloha Friends,

Another year has come and gone! They pass so quickly now, and I want to make sure to take a moment to thank you all for your support.

As most of you know, it has been a difficult year for my family due to a tragic accident that happened at the end of 2018. I have not been working my usual hours, partially due to the stress of being in school but also because I am trying to take care of my health. I want to be as present as possible for my family, and I thank you all for putting up with my haphazard schedule.

After almost an entire year of searching for just the right therapist to be my new partner, I am so grateful to have found Mona Ballard. She is a phenomenal Thai Massage Specialist. I want to encourage you all to book an appointment and try her out. We are so lucky to have her on the North Shore. Pictured below is an image from her website, www.monathaibodyworks.com. You can schedule a massage at her location in Ka'ala Healing Arts by visiting her website and booking online.

Thai Warrior Massage from Mona Thai Bodyworks

I am also thankful for Jeff Ramos and his ongoing support and investment in the Ka'ala Healing Arts Center. I am so proud to be a member of the KHA ohana, and I love serving the community through the art of massage. I have always considered myself lucky because I have a job doing the thing I love most. I also want to extend my thanks to the Otake ohana as well. I don't get to say it as often as I'd like, but I appreciate you!

As we are now coming up on the holiday season, I want to remind you all that I sell gift certificates online. Massage therapy is the perfect gift for friends and family, and I would be honored to provide services to your loved ones. You can purchase massage gift certificates completely online and choose to have them mailed through the USPS or emailed directly to the recipient. Our Waialua massage clinic is convenient to the North Shore, Haleiwa, Mililani, and Wahiawa.

In the meantime, look for Ka'ala Healing Arts on Facebook. I am now their social media manager, and I will be featuring each of their therapists in a special spotlight post.

Advanced Ashiatsu: A Week of Fun and Sun on the North Shore of Oahu

Aloha Friends,

I have been doing DeepFeet's version of ashiatsu since 2007. I even went one step further and got certified in Advanced Ashiatsu through Barefoot Masters as well. When I heard that Christy Bebout was traveling to the North Shore, I went all in! I had a wonderful experience, and I am glad that I made the commitment. Learn more about Ashiatsu training by reading this article.

Beware of Hidden Fees from DeepFeet Bar Therapy

I do want to point out that all of DeepFeet's instructional courses have a hidden fee of $25 each for certification. This is in addition to the tuition of the class and is required to be paid afterward in order to actually be considered certified.

Advanced Ashiatsu Massage class on the North Shore of Oahu

DeepFeet Bar Therapy instructor, Christy Bebout, traveled to the North Shore from Colorado to teach advanced ashiatsu. Here she is pictured below in the front-center with her talented foot. You can tell how much fun we are all having from the looks on our faces. I am the goofy one on the far left.

Waialua, Hawaii

Here is our instructor, Christy Bebout (far right), posing alongside fellow North Shore DeepFeet instructor, Abby Parker, and two of our classmates, Erin and Mei. Our classes were hosted at Abby Parker's North Shore Ashiatsu and Massage, Waialua's new massage teaching facility. Abby Parker recently opened at her new location in the Scoop of Paradise building at the historic old Koga Theatre last December. She has done a phenomenal job renovating the space.

Proper Body Mechanics

One of the most important things I found out last week is how many of the advanced two-footed strokes I had learned from Barefoot Masters utilized poor body mechanics. Fortunately, I have never had any issues with my shoulders, but it is great to know there are easier ways to do certain techniques that result in less strain on my body. The information I learned on proper body mechanics is priceless and will prolong my massage therapy career.

You really CAN learn to do everything with your feet

I was amazed at how I learned to target muscle groups that I previously thought Barefoot Massage was unsuitable for. This includes problem areas, such as the neck, rotator cuff, serratus anterior, and even subscapularis. I am now a firm believer that given enough time and practice, a therapist can learn to use their feet just as effectively, perhaps even more efficiently, than their hands!

Ashi-Thai feels amazing

In the photo above, we are performing Ashi-Thai massage. This is another modality that I was skeptical of prior to taking the class. Sometimes people are hesitant to spend their money on pressure-point/ stretch techniques when they could be getting an oil-based massage, so I was uncertain I wanted to spend so much money to learn the technique. After having experienced this massage, I have completely changed my mind. Ashi-Thai massage is AMAZING. If you haven't received it yet, you should try it out! The intensity of the deep pressure, combined with the release that a good stretch provides, results in some serious altered states of reality. It is incredibly therapeutic work that needs to be experienced in order to be understood.

Sonia and Mei, goofing off and eating chocolate croissants

It has been years since I've taken a workshop that is more than a few days in length. One of the most enjoyable and unexpected benefits of my week-long immersion in Ashiatsu was the camaraderie I experienced with the other therapists. A whole week of giving and receiving such amazing and intense bodywork was a transformative experience, bringing us all very close to one another. It was almost like being back in massage school!

If I had known how close I would become with these ladies, I would have taken more time off of work to spend with them. In fact, if I had it to do all over again, I would opt to stay at Ke Iki Beach with them. It really was an amazing experience, and I feel like I missed out by not hanging out with the gang! (Yes, Erin. I WILL come to visit you someday). Is it too soon to plan an Ashi reunion???

Ashiatsu Basic training is offered in Waialua, Hawaii

Abby Parker is amazing at one-footed advanced ashiatsu strokes. She is Oahu's premier DeepFeet Ashiatsu instructor, and her teaching facility in Waialua, near Haleiwa is the perfect location to learn Ashi. After having seen (and felt) her skills, I can't recommend her enough to anyone wanting to learn Barefoot Massage. If you are traveling from the mainland, her accommodations will give you an authentic North Shore, Hawaii experience. It is well worth the money to stay on the North Shore, even if you are just coming from downtown Honolulu. I can't imagine a better place to learn Ashiatsu!

If you are interested in booking an amazing Barefoot or Ashi-Thai massage, call Sonia Beauchamp, "The Haleiwa Massage Muse" in Waialua at 808-285-3009.

Ashiatsu is amazing, and I feel transformed after a week of giving and receiving Barefoot Massage. The price of the classes is worthwhile for just that alone!

I love what I do, and I look forward to working with you!

Sincerely,
